What is it?

Nordic walking is a specific walking technique that originated in Finland - hence the term Nordic. You use special Nordic walking poles (not hiking/trekking ones) to work your upper body as well as your legs by pushing your body forwards by planting and pushing backwards with your arms. It gives you a highly effective all over workout that can be enjoyed at many levels - low, medium or high intensity. You work around 90% of your muscles during a Nordic walk and burn more calories yet it doesn’t feel like one! Nordic Walking is a fun and social activity that can be enjoyed anywhere and all through the year.

More than 10 million people around the world now enjoy this outdoor activity.

How will Nordic Walking benefit you?

Nordic Walking combines walking with core and upper body conditioning which means that you can:

  • Burn around 20% more calories compared to walking without poles.

  • Release tension in your neck and shoulders.

  • Improve your posture and gait.

  • Strengthen your back and abdominal muscles.

  • Reduce the impact on your joints.

And because Nordic Walking doesn’t feel like hard work you’ll be happy to walk further and for longer.

Is Nordic Walking for me?

As long as you can walk then you can Nordic Walk and gain the many benefits from it!

One of the main things our Nordic walkers notice is, that by using the poles correctly, effort is shared between the upper and lower body so it actually feels easier than normal walking, particularly uphill. Nordic Walking puts less strain on joints than other activities and can be very effective for people with mobility issues or those recovering from illness or injury.

If you want to gain exercise benefits then it is great for toning problem areas such as the upper arms and abdominal muscles. Athletes can use it for cross-training

If you don't like working out in a gym or even don't like the thought of exercise then it's an ideal activity to get your body moving and be out in nature getting all those outdoor benefits too!

Really good as a way to come back from injury or being inactive for a while as the poles can support and guide you while you work to improve fitness as part of your rehabilitation

Our members love Nordic walking as a way to keep/stay fit, benefiting our mental health and wellness as well as being sociable - you can talk as you walk! It gets us out and exploring new places, noticing and learning about new things and is a really enjoyable outdoor activity that anyone can be part of - we have members in their 80s!

So what are you waiting for? Why not come and join us.

Our Committee & Team

We are a non-profit community group that began life in South Wigston in 2016.

Our aim is to make Nordic walking accessible to all by providing poles, expert tuition and encouragement at a low cost so that everyone can access the many health and social benefits group Nordic walking can bring.

We have a yearly elected committee that consists of a chair, secretary, treasurer, and four other members.

We couldn't do what we do without our qualified

Nordic walking instructor, Penny and three trained Nordic walk leaders, Val, Chrissie & Viv.
